Michael Callander

Michael Callander is a young but seasoned musician. His career began when he took an interest in the piano. He started lessons at the small tender age of 5. After his first session he was hooked and continued studying privately with Dorothea Johansen until the age of 12. However, he found himself hungry for more as the music flowed so naturally through him. In Grade 7 he joined the band program and began learning the trombone. He was blessed to be introduced to and learn from many talented visiting guest teachers and performers. His love for music grew even stronger and it was at this point he knew it was time to study privately. This is where one of his first dreams was realized as he was honoured to study with world-renowned jazz trombonist Al Kay at Humber College in Toronto, Ontario. The following year Michael took lessons with William Carn before returning to Calgary to study music education at the University of Calgary.

During Michael’s senior year studying in Toronto Ontario, he was introduced to a senior student in the Humber music program, Rob Laird. Rob taught The Body RegenTM breathing method and approach to practicing, performing and many aspects of life in general. Michael noticed a significant improvement in his anxiety and performance stress, as well as tone production and ease of playing after incorporating the breath and body aspects of The method.

Upon returning to Calgary Michael studied classical trombone with Jim Scott at the University of Calgary and conducting with Gareth Jones. Michael now has the opportunity playing throughout Calgary as a sought after freelancer for many various events. He regularly finds himself performing with the Calgary Jazz Orchestra. Michael has been blessed to have performed with a wide range of artists, and bands including Al Muirhead, Barry Shaw, Bryan Lynch, Christian McBride, Cory Weeds, Dick Oatts, the Dino Martinis, Ingrid Jensen, Luis Bonilla, Jon Ladines, and the Prime Time Big Band.
